The tool that makes the difference

100 prongs, hand-crafted from a single piece of bamboo. Our chasen is designed to blend matcha, water, and air into a smooth, frothy cup with the texture and aroma that no frother or blender can match.

Engraved with the Matcha Union logo. Plastic-free packaging.

How to use

Soak your whisk in warm water for 1–2 minutes before each use. This softens the bamboo and keeps the prongs elastic. You may notice them gently fanning out — that's normal.

Add ½ to 1 teaspoon (1–2g) of matcha to a bowl. Add 60ml of hot water (70–80°C, never boiling) and massage into a smooth paste. Hold the whisk vertically from the top and move briskly in a W or M motion, staying at the surface. After 15–20 seconds you'll see a fine green foam. That's when it's ready.

Care

Rinse with warm water after each use. No soap. Let it air dry on a whisk holder to keep its shape. Never put it in the dishwasher.

Why a bamboo whisk?

A chasen does something no electric tool can. It blends matcha, water, and air in a way that creates a fine foam on the surface, releasing the aroma and softening any bitterness. That foam is what turns a good matcha into a great one.

Electric frothers and blenders leave residual matcha unmixed and metal can affect the taste. A bamboo whisk gives you the cleanest, smoothest, most flavourful result.

Plus, there's something about making matcha by hand. Two minutes of slow, intentional whisking. A small ritual that feels good.

How long does a bamboo whisk last?

With proper care (rinse after use, dry on a holder, soak before use), a good chasen lasts up to a year of daily use. You'll know it's time to replace when the prongs start to break or lose their shape.

Do I really need a whisk? Can't I use a frother?

A frother works for lattes, but for traditional matcha with water, a chasen gives a noticeably better result. The foam, texture, and aroma are different. If you care about how your matcha tastes, it's worth it.

Why do the prongs spread out?

That's called "blooming" and it's normal. Soaking before use encourages this. It means the bamboo is flexible and working properly.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

No. Hand rinse with warm water only. Soap and dishwashers will damage the bamboo and shorten its lifespan.
