How to Matcha without a Whisk - 4 Ways

How to Matcha without a Whisk - 4 Ways

A traditional bamboo whisk (chasen) allows for the best combination of matcha powder, water and air to create a frothy drink with a smooth aroma but it’s not the only way! If you don’t have your chasen around, read on to learn four alternative ways to make matcha without a matcha whisk.

1. Using a Blender

Using a blender is a quick and easy way to make a cup of super frothy matcha tea, A high quality blender will remove all clumps and create a smooth and creamy matcha! Cleaning the blender may be the only downside.

How to:

Step 1. Warm 250ml of milk in a pan for a Matcha Latte or 125ml of water for a Ceremonial Matcha.

Step 2. Add ½ a tsp of matcha powder to the blender along with your warm milk or water. Be careful not to burn yourself.

Step 3. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until smooth and frothy.

Step 4. Pour into your favourite cup and enjoy!

For an iced matcha reduce the amount of water to 75ml. Blend and pour over a glass, filled with ice and or milk.

2. Using a Milk Frother

This is probably the easiest way to prepare a creamy Matcha Latte. Simply follow the steps and let the frother do its magic. We recommend using a milk that froths easily.

How to:

Step 1. Pour milk into the frother until maximum. If your frother has different plug-ins, we recommend using the standard plug rather than the frothing plug as it allows for more milk to be filled into the frother - it will still make you a creamy frothy matcha!

Step 2. Add ½ tsp of matcha powder to the frothier using the perfect matcha scoop. You may sift the powder to ensure no clumps remain.

Step 3. Press start to froth (and heat if desired). When finished, pour into your favourite cup and enjoy hot or over ice!

3. Using an electric whisk

An electric whisk closely resembles a traditional bamboo whisk and is convenient to use and clean. Opt for a medium powered whisk to ensure a good blend of matcha powder and water and  to avoid splashing.

How to:

Step 1. Scoop ½ a tsp of matcha powder to a cup or deep bowl.

Step 2. Add 75ml of 80°C warm water.

Step 3. Switch on the electric whisk once it’s covered by water and let it froth the matcha until you see a smooth foamy layer. Turn it off before removing it from the matcha mixture to avoid splashing.

Step 4. Add 125ml of your favourite frothy milk and enjoy hot or over ice.

Optional: Skip step 2 and froth matcha directly together with 250ml of warmed milk in a deep cup.

4. Shaking Method

This simple method allows you to make matcha anywhere! All you need is a bottle or jar with a lid. Opt for a transparent shaker to easily check for clumps and use your muscles to create a nice layer of foam!

How to:

Step 1. Add about 125ml of water for a Ceremonial Matcha or 75ml for a matcha latte to a shaker bottle.

Step 2. Add ½ tsp of matcha powder to the shaker bottle.

Step 3. Close the lid.

Step 4. Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds until all the clumps are dissolved.

Step 5. Enjoy over ice or with your favourite milk.
